Smash & Bend Jig Press Setup

Smash & Bend Jig Press Setup

Posted by Justin on 8/14/2007
I decided to try combining the steps of smashing the ends and bending the ends into one motion so that the beams have the bend structurally formed into them, rather than simply bending the flat tab at the end. The only disadvantage of doing it this way is that your hole drilling jig has to allow for the bar to angle downward away from the drill press, making it a bit more complicated to set up and adjust. But the way the ends came out really made it worthwhile. These hydraulic presses are backbreaking to use, it's like jacking a car up each time you want to smash the end of a tube - and I had 160 tubes to do. I was saved midway though it by replacing the press's hand pump bottle jack with a compressor driven jack.

The tube is positioned so that the far end rests on the leg of my workbench about a foot below the level of the press.

The screw leaning outwards provides a place to hook the edge of the emt underneath so it doesnt lift up during the press.
